Mayan Riviera Route. You can begin touring this magnificent region in Cancun, 37 km (23 mi) north of Puerto Morelos. Considered the gateway to the Mayan world, Cancun is a spectacular beach destination with white-sand beaches offering an amazing view of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. And it that?s not enough, you can also enjoy modern tourist resorts and a lively night scene. Continuing south, 68 km (42 mi) ahead you will arrive at Playa del Carmen, a cosmopolitan city that has unique restaurants and resorts with spectacular beaches and landscapes. From there, head south on Highway 307 until you reach Xcaret, an important ecological park with a beach area, network of underground rivers, aquarium, so-called dolphinarium, butterfly sanctuary, an orchid nursery and an apiary. The park is a must-see for those looking to admire the region?s wildlife. While you?re there, you can also visit an archaeological site and a simulated Mayan village. About 27 km (16 mi) ahead you?ll find Puerto Aventuras, an ideal place to swim, kayak and golf by the Caribbean Sea. Just 2 km (1.2 mi) ahead you?ll arrive at Akumal, known for its white-sand beaches and turquoise-blue waters. This spot is ideal for those looking for rest, relaxation and close contact with nature. Continue southward along Highway 307 until you arrive at Xel-Há, 47 km (29 mi) from Playa del Carmen. This place is considered one of the best spots to snorkel, which can be done in its main lagoon or underground rivers. Xel-Há has complete tourist services and you will also be able to swim with dolphins. On the same highway you?ll reach Tulum, 64 km (40 mi) south of Playa del Carmen. It is one of the most beautiful archaeological zones on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Among its main structures are the Castle, the Temple of the Frescos and the Temple of the Descending God. The view of the Caribbean Sea will leave you with an everlasting impression of the Mayan Riviera.
