SURROUNDING AREAS, TOURING AND NOTABLE PLACES

Touring Nearby Towns ? Departing from Campeche, take Highway 180 in the direction of Merida for 15 km (9 mi) to arrive at the first stop: La Estacion de Vida Silvestre de Hampolol, where you can have close contact with nature and learn about the efforts being made there to conserve wildlife. Continuing along the same route, 26 km (16 mi) ahead you?ll arrive at the town of Tenabo, where you can see a combination of modern architecture and old Mayan houses with palm leaf roofs. During your visit to this town, we recommend that you eat at the small market, where you can also buy huipiles (traditional Mayan wear). About 12 km (7 mi) from Tenabo you?ll reach Pomuch, which has old stone houses. This town is known for its traditional anise and cinnamon breads and other bakery treats stuffed with cheese and ham. From here, head 51 km (32 mi) until you arrive at Calkini, which has a very rural feel. In this town, you can visit the church of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. As you continue the tour, 10 km (6 mi) ahead lies Becal, which is the last stop. This traditional town with strong Mayan traditions has an interesting mix of neoclassical constructions and Mayan huts. Here you can buy palm jipi hats and other handicrafts.

Campeche Trolley Tour ? This small trolley car can seat about 40 passengers. It tours the streets of Campeche?s Historic Center while a guide provides information about the various historic monuments, such as the bulwarks, churches, walls and streets. It runs daily with departures at 9:00 a.m., 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
